Listen for the Initial Consonant Blends
Use picture cards and a game board. Turn all the picture cards upside down in a pile and the teacher will decide which student will go first. The first player picks up a card, pronounces the word for the picture and correctly places the picture on the conconsant blend space that corresponds to the initial consonant blend of the word. If the player cannot correctly place a card on the correct consonant blend space, the card is placed on the bottom of the pile. The game is over when the students fill all of the consonant blend spaces.
Short Vowel Bingo
Print off a blank bingo board. Write a list of 25 words with short vowel sounds on the board. Instruct the students to write, the best they can, the words on their bingo cards in any order leaving the free space blank. Or the teacher can have bingo cards that already have the words on the bingo cards in any order. Write the words on index cards and shuffle them. Draw one from the stack and read it aloud. Have student dab the word that you said. The first student who gets 5 in a row wins.
